What Happens if You Are Injured in an Uber Accident?

|

Recently, I narrowly survived a potentially devastating accident at the hands of a fatigued Uber driver. On my way home from an out of town conference, the Uber driver fell asleep at the wheel and rear-ended another vehicle. Luckily, no one involved was hurt. However, both the driver and I were particularly fortunate to have avoided oncoming traffic.

The meteoric rise in ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft has resulted in a large number of collisions like never before. The drivers working for these apps are independent contractors, which means there are no regulations for their hours, breaks, training, etc. Overextended and fatigued drivers often work for both Uber and Lyft so they can increase their income. This leaves other drivers, pedestrians, and motorists exposed to the hazards of sharing the road with negligent Uber and Lyft drivers

Uber & Lyft Insurance Policies

As a precautionary measure, most rideshare companies provide their drivers at least $1 million in insurance coverage. Uber and Lyft drivers also typically have significant insurance coverage in the event they do not cause the accident, but the responsible driver is either uninsured or lacking adequate insurance.
