Elmiron Lawsuit

Elmiron Injury Attorney in Louisville

Protecting Those Harmed by Dangerous Interstitial Cystitis Medications

Elmiron® lawsuits are emerging claiming that the drug can damage the retina and subsequently result in vision problems and even blindness in patients. Elmiron® is prescribed to treat bladder pain associated with interstitial cystitis (IC). There was no warning of possible eye damage on the Elmiron® label until June of 2020. The label now warns that Elmiron® can change pigments in the retina, causing blurred vision, reading problems, and sensitivity to low light. There are great concerns and allegations that this warning is deficient.

In 2018, doctors at Emory Vision Center, began to see a trend of vision problems amongst long-term users of Elmiron®. This discovery lead to a study in 2019 that showed 22 of 91 Elmiron® patients (greater than 24%) showed evidence of retinal damage and macular degeneration.

Elmiron® Side Effects

Elmiron® Injury Claim Damages

On September 23, 2020 plaintiffs asked the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) to form a coordinated proceeding (an MDL) for eye damage cases against Janssen Pharmaceutical, the maker of Elmiron®. Often, lawsuits involving the pharmaceutical industry have large numbers of plaintiffs seeking retribution from the makers of the drugs/medical devices. The courts may try to handle the large number of similar lawsuits by consolidating them into one court. A Multi-District Litigation (MDL) is a method of litigation for a large group of plaintiffs against a common defendant or defendants. MDLs are often used when there are common defendants, but the Plaintiff’s damages are not exactly the same as damages to other plaintiffs.
