Diffuse Anoxal Injury

Diffuse Anoxal Injury (DAI) is a type of brain injury that occurs when large masses of the brain undergo trauma as opposed to one localized area. Diffuse Anoxal Injury takes place when the head is violently rocked and the brain tissue is torn. This tearing may occur at impact or over time as brain swelling occurs.

Nearly half of all severe head traumas result in Diffuse Anoxal Injury. Generally the injured person will suffer unconsciousness and very often will be in a state of coma. Diffuse Anoxal Injuries usually result from a sudden, powerful acceleration then deceleration of the head. This rocking movement of the brain within the skull can cause tearing or shearing of axons. Axons are the nerve fiber that conducts nerve impulses away from the cell body. As axons are severed so too are communications between neurons in the brain. This can hamper or shut down such body functions as speech, movement, mental processing and basic life functions.

Most commonly DAI is caused by a motor vehicle accident, although physical abuse, sports injuries and some severe falls can trigger this severe brain injury.
